6 Things That Make Anxiety Worse

The constant worry, panic and racing thoughts are just some of the many emotions associated with anxiety disorders.

 

If you are suffering from anxiety there is a good chance you are making mistakes that could be making your anxietyworse. You may not be realizing you are causing more destruction to yourself, and strengthening the hold the anxiety has over you.

 

Anxiety is one of the most common forms of mentalillnesses in the United States. Some forms of anxietydisorders include panic disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder, phobia and generalized anxiety disorder. Each of these disorders can be triggered by traumatic life events or environmental stress.

 

Anxiety attacks usually occur because your mind loses control and spirals into negative thoughts. It is important to really get in touch with how you feel, try and find a distractionand use meditation as an outlet.

It’s time to stop feeding your anxiety and let go of the badhabits that are making your anxiety worse. Let me help get you on the right track to getting rid of your negative feelings, and begin looking at life from a brighter perspective.   

 

1. Spending time with the wrong people

 

Spending time with people that have a negative influence on you is one of the worst things you can do.  It is true that those suffering from anxiety are more prone to having a negative mindset. Therefore, it is important to put yourself aroundpositive people. People that can lift up your spirits and make you laugh will help you view life with a more optimistic attitude.  

 

2. Being alone/Being the victim

 

When suffering from anxiety one of the worst things you can do is be alone with your thoughts. When you allow yourself to be the victim of anxiety instead of someone doing whatever it takes to overcome it, you are causing further destruction to yourself. Do not mope around; you are only letting the anxiety take more control over you. Get out and do something fun, spend time with a friend, go to the gym or see a therapist to work through your feelings.

 

3. Hyperventilating

 

Hyperventilating is usually associated with panic attacks due to anxiety disorders. Try to work on your breathing techniques. For most people, racing thoughts and a constant running mind is very common. Those suffering from anxietyare usually so focused on the past and the future it causes them to lose control. Mindfulness or mantra basedmeditation are great for reducing anxiety and slowing down racing thoughts. Meditation forces you to focus on the present, leaving you in a more calm and relaxed state of mind.

 

4. Trying to stop thinking

 

Trying to stop your racing thoughts only leads to more anxiety producing thoughts. Instead of trying to talk yourself out of thinking, try asking yourself questions. Is there a chance I am making this situation into something bigger than it is? Is there a reason to believe something is actually wrong? Then, instead of getting down on yourself, tell yourself thatyou are okay, it’s just your anxiety and you will through it.  

 

5. Caffeine

 

Caffeine is a stimulant; it already causes the normal person to feel jittery and awake. For someone suffering from anxiety it increases their heart rate, making them feel nervous and moody.  Caffeine can cause a person suffering from anxiety to be more susceptible to panic attacks.

 

6. Alcohol and other drugs

 

Alcohol and other drugs may make you feel as if you’re anxious feelings have passed, but it will only make youranxiety worse in the long run. In some cases you may reach to alcohol or other drugs to relieve the emotions, only to find yourself withdrawing when off the substance. This too will make your anxiety worse. Try seeking healthy outlet, go to the gym or see a therapist.
