Our hearts and prayers go out to the victims, of the Pulse nightclub shooting, their families, the LGBTQ community and the city of Orlando. I live an hour from Orlando and this past week this city I love was shattered twice. First by the murder of Christina Grimmie and then only a few days later this horrible tragedy at the Pulse nightclub.
These events truly brought home to me the layers of trauma that have been building not only locally but across the planet. Paris, Brussels, Orlando all the tumult around the world building into layers of trauma for us all. This is how trauma layers occurs its trauma by accumulation. Each of these tragic events in of themselves as horrible as they are, may not overwhelm us, we mourn and grieve but we continue to function.
When these things occur over and over though they can create layers of trauma, they build, our anxiety builds, our fear builds and one more thing may push us over the edge or push us to utilize unhealthy coping mechanism that undermine our health and stability. We must take care of ourselves and deal with each of these horrible events and process each of them as they come.
I think of the layers of trauma in the LGBTQ community and how this late set attack adds to that pain. My hope is that those affected by this attack not only on a personal level but on a community level are able to heal from this and not have it be the straw that breaks the camels back. We must heal as individuals, as a community, as a nation and as a world.
